Subtitle: "Or, why Vanderbilt sucks at football"

Should athletes be expected to perform in the classroom, or should academic eligibility requirements be eliminated? Are today's collegiate athletics teams simply training grounds for the NBA or the NFL?

A former Vanderbilt athletics director once complained that the school was expected to be Harvard during the week and Alabama on Saturdays. Maybe we need to pay more attention not only to what today's academic institutions expect from our collegiate competitors, but also to what they expect from their institutions.
